My back hurts but I don’t know where to start? What should I do first?
Answer:
Well, I’m a natural health and exercise advocate, but I don’t know your condition or knowledge levels, so I say go and see your doctor or a back specialist first.
For myself, I haven’t been to the doctor apart for running repairs (stitches and bandages) and to get my ears syringed for about 5 years. I’m confident I can stay healthy and out of the health system by myself. Actually its more accurate to call it the “sickness system”. but that’s just my opinion and a whole other discussion!
NOTE: Its taken me a lot of trial and error and learning to get to the position where I’m confident to do my own thing. It means developing a keen awareness of what your body is doing and what it can take.
Hello,
I see that the Sciatica Center website gives really useful information. We have created a public interest website at http://www.backpainexpert.co.uk/home.html focused on backpain and how to deal with it, which I thought may be of interest to your visitors.
We don’t make any profit from the site but we’d like to spread the word and get the information out to as many people as possible. Links from sites like sciaticacenter.com/ are really valuable to us and I was wondering if you could place a link to BackPainExpert?
Please let me know if you’d like any more information about our site, or if there is someone else I need to speak to about this.
Thanks in advance

Sciatica is not always in your back is what i have been told. I think i have in it in my left leg to my toes, but it starts at my butt. All i see is the way to stop the back pains. what do i do if i dont have back pains but want to get rid of it??????
Answer:
The pain down your leg/in your toes/in your butt is almost certainly due to pressure being placed on your sciatic nerve in your lower back. This is very common symptom of sciatica.
In other words you’re feeling the pain in other places than your back but the source of the problem is in your back.
The pressure gets placed on your sciatic nerve for a variety of reasons:
- inflammation of a disk or surrounding tissue
- minor displacement of a disk or vertebra (misalignment of your back).
You can probably get a quick fix by visiting a (good) chiropractor or osteopath. A longer term solution needs you to:
- stop whatever is you’re doing that’s causing the problem (poor posture, wrong lifting etc)
- start doing exercises to strengthen your back.
I have been diagnosed with sciatica, can this cause my calf and ankle to swell?
Hi Katherine,
I have never experienced swelling myself as a direct result from sciatica.
However, given your back is the main nervous transmission system in your body, it’s likely that interference in your nervous system could result in localised dysfunction in those areas e.g. the calf and ankle as you mention, that are served by the nerves that the sciatica is affecting.
If you can walk OK, then I suggest you include at least one 30 minute walk into your schedule each day, ideally 2 if you have the time - morning and evening.
All I read on sciatica is pain from lower back down backside of leg. My pain is from lower back down mostly on front side of leg. What type of sciatica is that?
Hi John,
It’s all the same sciatica - the difference is where the pressure is being placed upon the sciatic nerve and thus which part of the nerve bundle that services your legs will be affected.
The worst bout of sciatica I have personally experienced gave me pain down the front and side of my right thigh (my back weakness usually manifests on the right side of my body). It was absolutely excrutiating.
In my particular case I exercised too hard for too long as I tried to work my way through the sciatica and learnt the hard way about moderation.
I also made my condition worse by falling on a wet marble floor as the initial episode was clearing up.
Is rollerblading good for sciatica?
Hmmmm. In general gentle, steady exercise is good for sciatica e.g. walking, swimming, cycling if you’re on a upright bike.
Rollerblading is marginal in the sense that unless you’re a skilled rollerblader, the probability of some sort of fall is reasonably high.
Falls are bad for sciatica due to the risk of aggravating your condition.
my question is, my mom who is 83 has sciatica/rheumatory arthritis can this type of pain cause you not to have an appetite. thank you
Answer:
At any age, pain can cause you to lose your appetite. At 83 even more so because your body has less resilience.
Sciatica pain by itself can be debilitating. Add on rheumatory arthritis and its a painful mix.
Why exactly are people with Sciatica unable to straighten their knee? Is it because of stiff ligaments, muscles from the pain? or the nerve itself gets overstretched? Is there a way to treat that? would stretches help in getting the knee straightened after all?
Answer:
Most sciatica originatesd from pressure being placed on the sciatic nerve in the lower back.
This nerve transmits the signals that enable you to operate your leg. If there is enough pressure on the nerve, the signals can’t get through properly e.g. your knee doesn’t get the nerve signals it needs to work normally.
Yes stretches will help.
I never had pain in my back until I went to me chiropractor. I now have sciatica on my left side, gout in my left elbow and a pain in my right side. I am living on about 10 Tyleols a day to alleviate the pain. Please help me with the sciatica!
PS. I have gone to this chiropractor for years and swear by him. I also have severe COPD and congestive heart failure. He has helped me with my breathing and initially I went back to him, after eight months of being away from him, because I couldn’t stand longer than 2 seconds to do anything, including doing my dishes. Now I can stand about 4 seconds but my sciatica has hurt big time for about two weeks now, ever since I went back to him. Please Help!!!
Answer:
It sounds like there a number of things going on with your health.
- Are you seeing a doctor? Does the advice/treatment he/she gives you make sense? Do you understand it? Do you follow it?
- Are you taking prescription drugs? How many?
- Try the free natural health book you can download from here
- Sometimes sciatica stays around for an extended period. In that case, keep on doing exercises but be gentle with your back.
- Follow the exercises and suggestions in the free back health and exercise course.

I have Sciatica for over a week since then i have had headaches, is that connected?
The answer is Yes, sciatica and headaches are often connected.
Often, a misalignment in one part of your back will cause other parts of your back to compensate. Sciatica is most often caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve caused by muscle stress and/or misalignment in your lower back.
To compensate for the stresses in your lower back the spone in your neck area may also adjust its orientation causing a headache.
