Knee Pain & Sciatica

Goin gback to basics, sciatica is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve which runs down into the leg. Often the pain starts in the lower back area and then radiates down one of the legs.

On its way down the leg, pain or sensitivity can arise in a number of places including the knee - hence the knee pain, thigh, calf and foot.  

Exactly where you feel the pain depends on where the sciatic nerve is pinched. It can appear at the front or rear of your knee and/or travel all the way down the back of your leg to your foot.

Where Does The Sciatica Originate?

With regard to the structure of your back, L4 and L5 are the names given to the bottom two lumbar vertebrae at the base of your spine and S1 is the top of the Sacrum.

Because of the stresses it is subject to, most commonly the L5-S1 the disc that gets damaged. The L4-L5 disc is the one that is next most commonly damaged.   

Damaged or mis-shapen discs lead to pressure being put upon the sciatica nerve.

Piraformis Syndrome

This is also a cause of sciatica that occurs when the sciatic nerve passes through the buttock and goes through or under a muscle called the 'Piraformis'. 

Tension in the Piraformis often results in symptoms that are  confused with those of a herniated disc, because sustained tension in this muscle, which arises from from a variety of lifestyle related sources, leads to the formation of trigger points.

This then results in the compression of the sciatic nerve and sometimes problems with  the SI joint (which sits between the spine and the pelvis).
